The city's main talent
If Bakuvians have a superpower, it is the ability to joke — quickly, warmly and above all about themselves. Here humour is used to heal, to reconcile and to welcome guests.
Baku humour cannot be faked: it grows from the life of a large multilingual courtyard, where a sharp word was valued as much as a good pilaf. Here people laugh at themselves better than at others.
Humour
The Baku school of humour thundered across the country through KVN: teams from Baku are among the most decorated and beloved in the game's history. Their intonation and way of joking were recognised from the first line.
But KVN is only the peak. The real school was in the courtyard, at weddings and around the tea table, where improvisation and a sharp reply were an obligatory part of conversation.

What the laughter is made of
First laugh at yourself — and only then, kindly, at the world.
Play at the seam of Russian and Azerbaijani, understood by one's own.
A sharp reply is valued above a pre-prepared witticism.
People joke not to wound but to embrace — it is the humour of friendship.
Humour
A Baku joke is almost always kind: it does not hurt but brings closer. To tease a guest here is a sign of affection, and to reply in kind is proof that you are one of us.
That is why Bakuvians are so loved in any company: they bring not only toasts but that warm laughter by which the city is recognised everywhere.

The image of Baku humour here is generalised and idealised — a fond memory of a city tradition, not a strict study.
